Our unique curriculum prepares young physicians to empower families and heal communities:
1. Health Equity: All residents are enrolled in our Health Systems and Equity Curriculum. In partnership with the prestigious Rhodes College, our residents undertake three months of specialized training in health systems learning about systemic poverty and the impact it has on our patients. Residents have an opportunity to utilize three elective blocks (out of six available) to complete a post baccalaureate certification in Health Systems and Equity. BMH will pay the tuition for this course. Residents also have opportunities to learn from regional and national innovations in health systems. Additionally, we collaborate with charity community clinics so that all our residents have direct, hands-on experience, working with the rural and urban underserved.
2. Academic Medicine Pathway: Taking three residents each in R2 and R3, our AMP track prepares residents for a career as faculty in academic medicine. You have heard that the word doctor comes from the Latin word docco, meaning to teach. Residents in this track have specialized curriculum aimed at improving teaching skills. They work alongside residents and faculty from our program and students and faculty from Baptist Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine. They present their research at conferences such as the Society for Teachers in Family Medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians and other regional and national academic medical conferences.
3. POCUS: All residents receive longitudinal training in Point of Care Ultrasound. Our program equips our residents with access to handheld POCUS to be used in hospital and ambulatory settings to augment clinical examination. Each quarter has a dedicated half day workshop on POCUS and Radiopedia and carries a new POCUS assignment aimed at broadening procedural skills. Residents have access to online learning modules for self-paced learning. Residents will also have an opportunity to utilize an elective for POCUS learning at a BMH hospital. Our residency aims to equip you with all the skills and requirements of the modern work marketplace.
4. Global Health Elective: Select residents have opportunities to rotate with physicians from across the Baptist system for a global health elective during their third year and present their observations during our annual multispecialty regional residency symposium. This elective helps residents learn about health systems in emerging countries, comparing and contrasting with the US health systems, and thus assisting them in their evolution into global health executives. Learn about the challenges of international medicine and patient care at our sister hospital AIC Kijabe Hospital, Kijabe, Kenya.
5. Geriatric Medicine Fellowship: Interested residents get personalized education in geriatric medicine, including medical as well as social aspects of the care of the elderly, Value Based Care, navigating Medicare and Medicare Advantage programs, caring for the community dwelling seniors in different settings such as homes, assisted living, and skilled nursing facilities. Baptist Memorial Hospital offers an ACGME accredited 12-month post residency fellowship in Geriatric Medicine.
6. Addiction Medicine Fellowship: Addiction is one of the most common afflictions in the United States, affecting millions of Americans. Our program provides you with the training you need to help your patients, especially when paired with our focus on health equity and delivering care for marginalized and the underserved. Baptist Memorial Hospital offers an ACGME accredited 12-month fellowship in Addiction Medicine.
7. Rural Medicine Track: Coming soon. In 2024, ACGME awarded our program to accept 2 additional applicants for Rural Medicine Track. Residents in this track will complete their intern year in Memphis, and then two additional years at sites in Union City and Huntingdon, Tennessee. Residents will learn about the unique challenges that face rural patients and their families today and how to help families navigate fragmentated health systems across rural America.
