Hospitalist Pathway

Between 8 - 15% of practicing Hospitalists are ABFM diplomates nationally. That percentage varies geographically, with some areas of the US having over half of their hospitalists trained in Family Medicine. Because of the shift in Family Medicine practice patterns from solo or group practice to employed practice, the number of Family Physicians choosing to specialize in Hospital Medicine has seen a steady rise in recent years.  Therefore, having a specific pathway for residents who anticipate a career in Hospital Medicine can be useful to them in their residency training period.
This pathway is designed to provide residents with a training experience that includes a variety of extra experiences in those areas of specific concern to hospitalists.  Besides the AAFP and ABFM memberships of all Family Medicine residents, those interested in this pathway will be encouraged to become members of the Society of Hospital Medicine, the most prominent national organization in the field.

In addition to the core family medicine curriculum, residents in this pathway will have 4 months of electives to choose from a variety of hospital rotations.

Potential rotations include:

  • Additional Emergency Department, Inpatient Medicine and Critical Care rotations
  • Longitudinal outpatient experience into the BMH Post-hospitalization Clinic for complex cases
  • Special rotations in Cardiology, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, or Oncology
  • Didactic and in-hospital experiences with inpatient leaders such as Chief Hospitalist, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, and Case Management personnel

Supplementals for the Hospitalist Pathway:

Residents in the Hospitalist pathway will be expected to complete a Quality Improvement Project in conjunction with their advisor and the BMH-Memphis CMIO
Residents will complete a relevant ABFM KSA module for each of the 4 elective months
